Artist Statement
My work focuses largely on geometric, measured, architectural structures inspired from what I see around me as I walk through the city. Or, if not that, then I take my inspiration from my interest in neo-expressionist architecture and German expressionism. Colour, texture and depth of field all come into my work on a huge scale as I play with the surroundings to describe a futuristic, digital cityscape or freestanding structure. When I decide on an image to work from I envision it as something else. Often there is only a certain aspect of the image that interests me but that can make for good pattern and repetition in certain areas. Collage and sketches have been used throughout my work to document and to play around with the environment.
More recently it is the building and the structures that interest me. Everything is so grouped together and squared off. My interest in expressionist architecture comes from the strange, abnormal buildings, buildings that don’t always look functional but are brightly coloured and layered on top of each other. Hundertwasser buildings are those types of structures and his paintings are very similar. There is still a description in his work but the colours are abnormal.
Throughout my wanderings around the city I document images using the camera to capture scenes and environments that interest me then I break up the images and play around with the different structures. Thomas Scheibitz has been very influential in my study of open spaces and playing with the idea of figuration and abstraction. He plays with various areas of the painting, often not using the colours that you would expect to see in a real world environment. It is this kind of technique and approach to an image that I wish to bring in to my work.
